I'm a novice extemper, and I've only competed in two tournaments at the non-novice level. Anyway, I've only used one or two sources for the tournaments and I can't imagine using 7-8 like you're meant to use, or is ideal. How do you remember the name of the magazine, the date and what the article says on eight occasions AND remember anything else?
Are you allowed to use a notecard for non novice extemp even?

On the notecard bit, different states have different rules. In my home state of Kentucky we don't divide extemp into novice/varsity categories simply due to numbers. I find that using a notecard is good for novices for the first several months they compete as they get used to the structure of the event. However, I will say that you won't place high @ most tournaments/win if you have a notecard...its just the way things roll.
Remembering things comes with experience. I'm not sure what grade level your in, but the older you get in competing the more your brain adapts and the more your able to process information. The more you give speeches the more your training your mind to operate in a certain way so I wouldn't get discouraged. My first extemp speeches the first four months I ever competed only used 3 sources (one for each point)...not great but it got me into the flow of things.
To remember things it helps to read a lot, do lots of practice speeches, and then develop quick outlines in the prep room (which help if you already have a broad knowledge base of the issue). Doing outlines of speeches in 10-15 minutes in prep will then give you the other 15 minutes to practice source citations out loud and repeat them over and over so you drill them into your head.
As a helpful plug, I'd encourage you to look @ ordering my book here on the site. It breaks down things such as structure and sources and is at a fairly reasonable price versus other extemp materials on the market. If interested, e-mail me at logan.scisco@wku.edu

I find that in my state, Indiana, where we are allowed to use notecards, there is no discrimination about whether or not you use a notecard so long as you don't depend on it all the time. I was the only speaker to use a notecard at my last meet and I still won against two 4-year members. I don't know how, but I did! I too have trouble using so many sources. One of the 4-year members on our team, who is an FXer never cites sources and usually places first or second just because he is such a good speaker. Go figure!

^^Same with Massachusetts. However, since this post is so old, I'm sure the OP is quite an experienced Extemper by now...
